If you’ve found your way to this page, there’s a good chance you’re dealing with something that brought you here for a reason: a tax notice that doesn’t quite make sense, a payroll question you can’t find a straight answer to, or maybe you’re just tired of feeling like a number at your current accounting firm. Whatever brought you here, welcome. This is the first post on our new blog, and we wanted to use it to introduce ourselves properly.

We’re Cohick & Associates, a bookkeeping, payroll, and tax firm based in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. We’ve been serving small businesses and individuals across Central PA, including Carlisle, Mechanicsburg, and the surrounding communities, since 1984. Over the next several months, this blog will cover the practical, everyday questions our clients ask us: Pennsylvania tax deadlines, payroll compliance, new business setup, recordkeeping, and the tax law changes that actually affect people in this region. But before we get into all of that, we thought it made sense to start with the basics: who we are, what we believe, and why we do this work.

Our Story: More Than 40 Years in Central PA

Cohick & Associates got its start in 1984 in a small office on the Carlisle Pike, sitting roughly midway between Carlisle and Mechanicsburg. It was a modest beginning for what has grown into one of the more established accounting practices in the region. As the client base grew over the following decades, the firm relocated to its current location on Alexander Spring Road in Carlisle, where our team works today.

That growth didn’t happen by accident. Today, Cohick & Associates serves more than 150 bookkeeping clients and 200 payroll clients each month, and prepares more than 4,000 income tax returns annually. Those numbers represent a lot of small business owners, families, and individuals across Central Pennsylvania who have trusted us with something that matters a great deal to them: their finances, their businesses, and their peace of mind.

What hasn’t changed since 1984 is the way we approach that responsibility. We built this firm on the idea that accounting doesn’t have to feel cold, confusing, or transactional. It should feel like working with a trusted advisor who happens to live down the road from you, not like submitting paperwork into a black box and hoping for the best.

What We Do

We offer three core services, and we’ve built our team around doing each one well rather than trying to be everything to everyone.

Tax Services. From individual income tax returns to corporate, partnership, non-profit, trust, gift, and estate tax returns, we handle tax preparation for nearly every type of filer. We also help clients work through tax issue resolution when correspondence shows up from the IRS, the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue, or a local tax authority. Tax law changes constantly, and our team invests real time in continuing education so that when you sit down with us, you’re getting current, accurate guidance rather than last year’s rules applied to this year’s return.

Bookkeeping. Clean, accurate books are the foundation of every good business decision, whether you’re a solo freelancer trying to understand your cash flow or a growing company preparing for a loan application. We help business owners maintain the kind of financial records that make tax season painless and give you a real, current picture of where your business stands.

Payroll. Payroll is one of those areas where small mistakes create big headaches: missed deadlines, misclassified employees, incorrect withholding. We manage payroll processing and payroll tax compliance so business owners can get back to running their companies instead of decoding withholding tables.

Why We Do It Differently

We’re accountants, but we don’t lead with that. We lead with the fact that we’re people who happen to be good at accounting, and we think that distinction matters more than it sounds like it should.

A few things guide how we work with every client who walks through our door:

You’ll talk to a real person. Call our office and you won’t get routed through an automated maze or left waiting on a callback that never comes. A real, friendly member of our team answers the phone, listens to what you actually need, and gets you connected to the right person. We think accessibility is the first step in earning trust, and that starts with the very first phone call.

We treat every situation like it matters, because it does. Whether you’re an individual working through a personal tax issue, a family navigating something complicated, or a business owner trying to make sense of your numbers, we don’t go through the motions. We take the time to understand your specific situation before we start offering solutions.

We serve everyone, wherever they’re starting from. You don’t need to have your financial life perfectly organized before you call us. Businesses of every size and structure (sole proprietorships, partnerships, corporations, LLCs, and non-profits alike) and individuals in every kind of circumstance are welcome here. We tailor our approach to fit your situation, not the other way around.

We keep you informed, not in the dark. Financial matters can be genuinely stressful, and a lot of that stress comes from not knowing what’s happening or what comes next. We guide clients step by step and keep communication clear throughout the process, so there aren’t unpleasant surprises waiting for you at the end.

These aren’t just talking points. They reflect the actual values our team holds itself to: being dedicated to the work, supporting each other and our clients as true team players, staying curious as lifelong learners in a field that never stops changing, and communicating clearly at every step.

What You Can Expect from This Blog

Going forward, we’ll be publishing regularly on the topics that actually come up in conversations with our clients. That includes Pennsylvania-specific tax guidance (because PA has plenty of quirks that generic national tax advice misses), payroll compliance for small business employers, deadlines and filing calendars, new business setup checklists, and general financial management tips for individuals and business owners alike.

Our goal isn’t to turn you into a tax expert. It’s to give you enough clear, practical information that you can make good decisions, ask the right questions, and feel less anxious about the financial side of running a business or managing your household. And when something is too complex to sort out on your own (which, in tax and accounting, is often), we’ll be here.
